In the last month of the third quarter, Quti Technology (01478.HK) still could not stop the declining sales of cell phone camera modules.

On Oct. 10, QutiQ announced on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that it sold about 34,422,000 cell phone camera modules in September, down 19.3% year-on-year.

In the first nine months of this year, QutiQ's cell phone camera module sales totaled about 318 million units.

"When the market is hot, the third and fourth quarters are the peak season for smartphone sales, and camera module sales will have a more significant upturn, but this year it has narrowed significantly." Wei Liang (a pseudonym), an executive of a domestic first-line optical manufacturer, said that by the downstream brand cell phone manufacturers cut orders, price cuts, now the industry is serious in the volume, the general order shortage.

According to Tide Electric Intelligence, China's smartphone sales in the first half of this year were 141 million units, down 14.5% year-on-year. "In the next three years, one billion units will be the 'ceiling' of global smartphone sales." said Sun Yanbiao of Tide Electric Intelligence.

Tide Electric Intelligence statistics of major optical manufacturers' camera module/lens product sales data show a sharp year-on-year decline this year, averaging more than two percent of the margin.

In the general environment of cell phone in-roll, the camera junction module presents a situation of falling volume and price.

Statistics show that Quti 32 megapixel and above cell phone camera module sales in February-September are different degrees of decline year-on-year, including April year-on-year decline of up to 43.%.

Among the cell phone camera module sales in September, Quti Technology's mid- and high-end products with 32 million pixels and above accounted for 9.195 million units, accounting for 26%. This indicates the lack of pulling power in the high-end cell phone market, especially the Huawei Mate50 flagship phone, which sold well after its release in September, Quti Technology did not enter its supply list.

Public information shows that Quti has a multi-year relationship with Huawei, which contributed 4.737 billion yuan of revenue in 2020, accounting for 27.77% of its total annual revenue. 2021, due to the "sniping" of Huawei's cell phone business, contributed less than 700 million yuan of revenue.

It is worth noting that Quti Technology's September sales of non-cell phone camera modules exceeded one million for the first time (1.083 million units). In the first nine months of this year, the company's non-cell phone camera module sales were 3.504 million.

Wei Liang said, facing the difficulties of insufficient smartphone innovation, extended user replacement cycle, and the global consumer environment downturn caused by the epidemic, the only way for optical manufacturers to cross the border to survive.
